Michael Owen may have had his problems putting the ball into the net and winning back a place in the England team after injury, but the Newcastle striker remains the richest young footballer in Britain.
Owen is worth £41m according to The Sunday Times Rich List, which will be published next Sunday. He has increased his bank balance by £4m in the past year and is ranked 12th in the country among the most wealthy people aged 30 and under.
Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and his girlfriend Coleen McLoughlin are joint 13th in the ranking with £35m. They are tied in the Young Rich List with Princes William and Harry and Honda Formula One driver Jenson Button.
Rooney’s teammate Cristiano Ronaldo is a new entry in the 100 Young Rich at No 34. The Portuguese player is worth £15m.
Button, who has won only one F1 grand prix in his career and collected six points in the championship last season, is well ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the financial stakes. Hamilton, the new kid on the block who drives for McLaren, missed out on the world title by one point. He is worth £15m and is 34th, but should increase his wealth after signing a deal that will keep him at McLaren for 15 years.
The rich are prominent in motor sport circles. Flavio Briatore, the Italian who revived the Benetton motor racing team with Michael Schumacher, is 644th in the main list with £120m. His latest project is financing Queens Park Rangers football club, which he acquired for £14m with F1’s Bernie Ecclestone.
Lawrence Tomlinson, who has £400m and is ranked 214th, owns the LNT construction company among other business interests but his true passion is for motor racing. In 2005, he bought Ginetta Cars, the kit and sports car manufacturer. To mark the firm’s 50th anniversary, it is launching the Ginetta G50 sports car this year. Tomlinson also owns Team LNT, a development and racing team, and he won the GT2 class in the Le Mans 24-hour race two years ago.
World Superbike champion James Toseland is worth £8m (65th), seven-time world motorbike champion Valentino Rossi has £75m (9th) and IndyCar racer Dan Wheldon £8m (65th) among the young and loaded.
A new entry in the young list, with £5m and ranked 94th, is Luol Deng, the Sudan-born star of the Chicago Bulls basketball team. The 23-year old came to Britain at the age of eight when his family claimed political asylum.
