Three 15-year-old boys were killed in a car crash after ordering £14 worth of takeaway kebabs and then “doing a runner”, a court was told yesterday.
A staff member at the kebab shop gave chase in a Volkswagen Bora when the youths left in a Ford Escort, driven by a friend, without paying for their food.
The Escort then hit a tree, causing it to “almost split in two” and throwing the three teenage passengers from the car to their deaths.
The Escort driver, Christopher Kibble, 18, of Sible Hedingham, Essex, and the Volkswagen driver, Sakir Olgun, 27, from Tottenham, North London, both deny three counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
Chelmsford Crown Court was told that Mr Kibble and his friends, Christopher Jolley, of Little Maplestead, Essex, Danny Archer, of Sible Hedingham, and Richard Warren, of Halstead, Essex, had ordered the food after night-fishing with other youths in Halstead in May last year. Mr Kibble, who was 17 at the time of the incident, had passed his driving test only a week before the crash.
Mr Olgun, who ran the local takeaway, delivered the food to Mr Kibble and his three friends as they sat in their car in the car park, the court was told. Christopher Paxton, for the prosecution, said that Mr Kibble then drove off, encouraged by someone in the car to “do a runner”. Mr Olgun then gave chase.
Both drivers were said to be travelling at “substantial speed” just before the crash. The chase took place on a dark country lane, with the Bora shunting the back of the Escort and trying to overtake on the wrong side of the road.
The court was told that Mr Olgun had fled to London after the crash, but gave himself up to police later, saying that he had panicked. He told police that one of the boys had racially abused him before driving away. Mr Olgun said that he had followed the Escort to get the registration number of the car.
Mr Kibble, whose blood sample after the crash was clear of drugs and alcohol, told police after the incident that he was not aware of a plan to not pay for the food. He said that he was driving sensibly before being rammed from behind and forced off the road.
Police who examined the wreckage said that Mr Olgun's numberplate had paint on it matching Mr Kibble's burgundy Escort. However, they decided that the impact was not enough to have forced the vehicle off the road.
The trial continues.

Why did he not get the reg in the car park, Why not ask for money first if you have been robbed before,Why not make them go to the shop 1/4 mile away if that,They had fathers one my best friend they had loving families and friends who are all still in shock as to why this happened
Mark, Sible hedingham, England
To get the registration was acceptable, to ram them off the road was excessive force - and could obviously have caused a dangerous accident.
At the point he attacked the youngsters, the shopkeeper criminalised himself, and will probably pay the price - which is sad given the cuircumstances.

The kebab guy probably will end up in prison -- not for "stopping someone stealing" but for causing death by dangerous driving. The worrying thing is that if they had been killed by a police car the driver would have got off scot free
Tim Bartlett, Upwell, norfolk
I argee completely with Tom and Hibbo - three youths and a young adult in a vehicle comitted a crime and three of them paid the ultimate price. However, they are solely responsible for their own deaths. I don't class this as a prank, I would class it as theft.
Colin, Stirling, UK
So 3 young lives lost and 2 maybe going jail all for £14 and a take-away!
Blimey....what a waste of life for something so small.
Mark, Watford,
No mention of the fathers, Terry? If the fathers were around then perhaps society's crime rates would drop...
Lara, South London, UK
Without saying the loss of life over this incident was not the intended outcome. Peoples lives are ruined however by theft and stealing. Sakir Olgun has to live knowing if he'd not stood up for livelihood and let them go they would be alive. He's a man of principles, and he's totally innocent

"The Kebab guy will end up in prison" - Hibbo, Dundee
Sad but probably true.
Welcome to "Great" Britain.
Pete, Cov,
What an absolute waste of human life. Three boys are dead because of a silly prank gone wrong. Who would want to be the mother of teenage boys, the most easily led group of any kind. If all boys 15-25 were locked up the crime/death rate would drop dramatically. I feel for the parent's.
Terry Owings, Auckland, New Zealand
It will be a total outrage if the shop keeper is found even 1% responsible for the deaths of 3 boys who decided to take what they had not paid for, the livelihood of this man, and died whilst he quite rightly gave chase. And they, cowards and cheats, fled and crashed by their own hands.
Tom Franklin, London, UK
The Kebab guy will end up in prison.
That is what happens when you try to stop someone stealing from you.
