Prince William found life as a naval officer not all plain sailing today when he was given the job of slipping a ship’s anchor.
The future king, who began a two-month attachment with the Royal Navy this week, fluffed his first attempt - then joked he owed a "crate of beer" to a colleague following the mistake.
But when it came to boat handling skills the prince was praised for the way he controlled a 40ft craft on the waters of the River Dart in Dartmouth.
Sub-Lieutenant Wales, as he is known in the service, will spend the next three weeks undergoing basic naval training, to learn core skills like navigation and sea safety, and touring various units like the Royal Marines and Fleet Air Arm.
The remaining five weeks will be spent with the frigate HMS Iron Duke, on duty in the North Atlantic, where the Prince is expected to join navy patrols searching for drug runners in Caribbean waters.
Commander Paul Halton, director of training at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, where William is under instruction, praised his efforts on the water.
He said: "The vessel he was driving today mimics in many respects how a frigate or a destroyer will handle, so that’s been a really important skill for him to learn.
"The important point to make is that for some of the manoeuvres he did today it would ordinarily take a young officer a number of weeks or months of training (to master) and he’s got the hang of it in just a day - so pretty good."

What an ungenerous lot are those that have had their say. As future head of state, it is a good thing that he learns something first hand of the Royal Navy. I expect that most of those in the Royal Navy are pleased the young prince is serving with them, too, albeit for a short time.

Isn't he a lucky boy .... fast-tracked wherever he goes. What a life.

Delighted to see that in one fell swoop my daughter' s nine month tough training as a logistics officer (sub lieutenant) and impending deployment to the Gulf can be glossed over and dismissed for HRH. Off to the Bahamas then! Good job he has such bloody competent 'subjects' to protect him.

Nice to see William enjoying his life on the ocean waves, and why not. I bet he won't be seen in the pubs in Dartmouth though, great pity because its a lovely little town and the young naval officers there are a credit to the countries from which they are citizens.
Phil de Buquet, Newport,
Oh God, that photo of Wales in the same blue Navy outfit that we saw the Teheran hostages wearing only last year. Shame and humiliation. And incompetence.
Bob, London,
I don't understand why people think the Windsors are living off the taxpayer. They aren't. The Civil List is funded from property they gave to the nation.
Kate, Vienna,
What lovely, good natured, jovial fun! I tell you all, he and his family are worth every single penny and column inch !!! They enrich this nation to such a ludicrous extent that I just can't fathom that republicans would rather spend som of 'their' money on things like "poor people" or "education"..
Glen Kristensen, London,
Nice article. It is nice to see a picture of a care free Prince enjoying himself. The media tend to forget just how young he and his brother are and they are still trying to serve their country.
Please keep showing the Royal Family in such a positive light.
