Microsoft admits: we still haven't fixed Hotmail
Microsoft was this morning struggling to find out why tens of millions of Hotmail users were left without access to their e-mail accounts yesterday.
Access to all of Microsoft's web-based communication tools - including Hotmail and instant messaging accounts - was blocked across the globe for several hours in the early afternoon yesterday
The problems, which affected the 80 million people who use Hotmail worldwide, were fixed within a couple of hours, Microsoft said, although late this afternoon many Times Online readers reported still being unable to log in.
"Yesterday, an issue began that has caused some consumers worldwide to experience difficulty logging in to their Windows Live ID accounts," Microsoft said in a statement. "This issue has since been resolved and normal operations have been restored to all customers."
Among the countries where users reported difficulties using Hotmail from 11.15am GMT yesterday were the US, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, France, the Czech Republic, and Honduras.
"It's now late afternoon GMT and I still cannot log onto Hotmail," Brian, a user from Manchester, said today. "Is it me or has Microsoft got in to bad habits of telling ther customers that the problems are fixed when they have not?"
"I cannot take this sort of outage for my business again," wrote one Denver-based user. "This comes at a mission-critical time for me. Not a good story for Microsoft Live."
Microsoft said in a statement this morning that Hotmail users were now able to log in again, although the company would not elaborate on the cause of the outage, saying only that it had worked "aggressively" to resolve what it called a unique problem.
Hotmail, which has been rebranded Windows Live Hotmail since being taken over by Microsoft, accounts for 24 per cent of the world's web-based e-mail accounts, a fraction behind Yahoo!, which has 25 per cent. More than ten million people use the service in the UK alone, according to Nielsen Online.
Two weeks ago, eight million BlackBerry customers in the US were left without access to their e-mail for several hours. It was the second time in a year that the network had failed.

Since 26th February till date (18th March, 2008) I and my friends in India are still not able to log into our Hotmail Accounts from those systems/machines from which the Users were not logged into the hotmail when the Outage Issue first hit Microsoft's Internet services.
In fact, I am unable to open any Microsoft website at all from this Windows XP machine, except 'Microsoft Office'.
Any SOLUTION, please?
Prof GK, New Delhi, India
Still unable to login to hotmail, Thursday 28th, 18:00 (Nearly 3 days now).
Betsy, Stourbridge, UK
They may have temporarily fixed the problem - I was able to get into my Hotmail account yesterday afternoon (27 Feb) but I can't get into it this morning! I can't take this unreliablilty. If MICROSOFT can't get their act together - I'm switching to another account. I currently use Hotmail to get all kinds of infop - some of it time sensitive and I need a venue I can rely on!
Liz, Tx, USA
Liz, San Antonio,
Getting the login page, but won't go any further - Thursday 12:46pm UK - RUBBISH!!!!
Nancy, Luton,
It's Thursday morning now, and still none of the emails I know were sent to me in the last 24 hours have arrived, not even junk mail (which is the silver lining).
I accept that any provider like this is going to have problems from time to time, but what really annoys me is Microsoft claiming the problem is fixed, when it clearly isn't.
It'd rather be told the truth, and what was being done to fix it, then be lied to.
Kate, London, UK
Microsoft have a cultural problem associated with staff selection - the result is over complex solutions compared to Google.
Vote with your feet..

Still can't log on to hotmail!

It is now Wednesday morning and I have again lost access to Hotmail.
I was ready to forgive and forget until now.

Tuesday morning , Massachusetts, I had a hard time logging in all day and continuing on this morning. I constantly have to reload to hotmail.com and signing in live. Is this reparable? I too may be switching to gmail possibly permanently.

Unable to logon to Windows Live nor traditional (pre-Live) Hotmails here in Australia. Sigh. This is now more than 13 hours since news bulletin was posted re the outage on your Times Online.
Miles, Canberra,
still having problems - can the boffins at microsoft get their act together please....
mario, london,
A free service and yet they complain.
steve tea, manchester, cheshire
Its free! And if you're running a business off it, thats just plain stupid.
You cant blame Microsoft entirely for the problem in case their are any external parties involved. The internet is a big place and is hugely complicated. How many of you blamed YouTube when they went down a few days ago? Was it their fault? No, it was Pakistan's
Sam, London, UK
I'm in Singapore. First noticed problems at 15.00 (09.00 GMT/UT) on Tuesday 26th. At that time no access at all. Currently 23.30 (15.30 GMT/UT) have been able to log in but it is not reliable - sometimes refused. I wonder why microsoft are not telling the full story - it's much worse than they're admitting and is ongoing.
Been with hotmail forever, and I pay for a premium (or whatever it's called) account but am looking to change.
Nick, Singapore,
15:38 GMT february 27 and I'm still having problems. I'm in the czech rep.

11:24 EST on Feb. 27 and still can't log on!
Kelly, Chittenango, NY
I cannot even access the login page now. Hotmail has been sporatic yesterday and today. This is a case of Microsoft having all its eggs in one basket- and then watching as all the eggs are broken. My personal opinion: If Microsoft does not seperate their systems (to avoid a blanket issue like this) then they are foolish. It's much better to have one section down and analyze it than to have a complete system go down.
ed, dayton, ohio
It is free. How often does this free service fall over? Stop complaining.
Angus, Sutton,
hotmail site still no responding when refreshed
LM, derry/londonderry, UK
Neither my husband nor I are able to log into our accounts (28 Feb 20.04 GMT). Having just moved abroad and not having started a job yet, my hotmail account is my way of talking to my friends and family back in the UK. And I am also using it as a contact email address for potential employers to contact me on. Very frustrating to say the least.
Kelly , UAE,
Not had a problem with hotmail at all over the last couple of days, just logged in without a problem (18:10) and been in and out all day.
Why on earth would any business user use a free account as their primary email anyway? Hardly looks professional does it.
CR, London, UK
my college emails are sent directly to my hotmail account. we are supposed to check our email daily for assignments and announcements, which I haven't been able to do

I don't understand why a company like Microsoft would state "Problem Solved" when it is obvious to their customers that this is not the case. The proof is in the pudding...
Lyn, Knoxville, USA / Tennessee
Hotmail still down in Tampa, 2/27/08 @ 1:50 pm EST.
Frankie, Tampa, FL
Everyday when I attempt to log in to my Hotmail account, it takes about 10 minutes to load the sign-in page, and fails to let me log into my account. I then have to try again at least 3 times before I find a way to access my account. I usually get tired waiting and therefore only access my account once a week (along with an full inbox accompanied mostly by junk e-mails!). This has been happening for about 5 months now, and I think it is completely unacceptable. I have had my Hotmail account for nearly 10 years and I am disgusted at how pathetically Microsoft, a world renowned business with a global annual revenue of US $51.12 billion, are handling Hotmail accounts worldwide. You would have thought that they've got enough money to sort it out. But then again, maybe not enough brains. There's probably a very good reason why you have to pay for a Mac account!
Fiona Burgess, Camden, London
JLCD Richmond says "my sympathies go to your business users who have a living to earn"
Really? Hot mail is a 2nd rate service, and
as far as I'm concerned, anyone who uses it for business purposes, simply doesn't take their business seriously.
Djanki Amoroli, Dudley,
I think I'm most irritated about the fact that Microsoft is downplaying the extent of the problem. The outage is not resolved, and is now going into its second day. For me, this is the last straw. It's hard to migrate to another service like gmail or yahoo, but the unreliability of hotmail has just gotten to be too consistent. It's been almost a decade, but . . . so long hotmail, thanks for the memories.
JCP, La Jolla, CA
Been restored???
I've not had access at all with my XP version since early Monday. Oddly enough, I had access with Vista last night and now just waiting for that computer to see if I can do it again. You don't realise how much info you have in that system til it's GONE.
Makes me think more about switiching to my Yahoo address...
Shannon, Vancouver,
I have been down for two days.
CHudson, Selbyville, US DE
Without a doubt it was out for much more then a few hours. Came back up at around 4:30GMT but kept going down every so often afterwards. First tried to get in around midday.
Squadala, Hyrule,
My e-mail has been down since Monday afternoon. It's Wednesday and I still can't access my hotmail, e-Bay account, MSN news, and other sites. Microsoft says the problem is fixed! I'd feel a lot better if they acknowledged the problem still exisits and were working on it.
John, LaSalle, IL
Quit complaining - It is FREE!
SW, Chapin, SC
They could AT LEAST explain the cause of the outage. Thumbs down for Microsoft.
Raphael, Montreal, Quebec
The UK had the same problem with Hotmail yesterday, so it wasn't just restricted to those countries mentioned. You only have to look on Yahoo Answers to see this was the case all day and not just for a couple of hours as stated by Microsoft.
Catherine, Fort William, UK
Hotmail was out. Haven't we heard about Chinese hackers trying to take down our systems here? Is is just a coincidence that we also had a major power outage in Florida? Wonder if this has happened anywhere else.
Gooby, Greenfield, Indiana
It's been up and down like a yoyo for about 5 weeks now. Getting fed up of it.

i am stil trying to access my e-mail and i'm unable to do so. This is horrible and intolerable especially if you have a business. It is not 12:40p.m. in EST in CT and I am still unable to log in and check my mail.
stephanie , hartford, CT
These things happen. Its the Internet.
I am shocked to hear some guy is relying on hotmail for his business. No one takes business with hotmail.com as their email address seriously!
Also... if email is so critical for him, he should get a back up email system. Must be a flakey business.
DW, birmingham, uk
Well time is 17:38 on Wednesday 27th Feb and i have no access to hotmail, though i don't have anything hugely important on this server its still an inconvenience as i can't send e-mails to my friend in the U S

I'm still unable to logon to hotmail at 11:47 CST. I have been able to logon once late yesterday afternoon since early yesterday morning and locked out ever since. I don't use a free email service for mission critical email, but it is annoying to be told the issue is fixed when it is no.

Today is still a major problem when trying to access hotmail.
very frustrating due to the fact that i need it to find a new job and my hotmail is the only contact that the recruiters can get me on. I could not access yesterday for 4 hours and even after it is still very slow. Come on microsoft, Millions of people are annoyed and problems like this dont just reflect the hotmail service but could damage microsofts future products in general.

Keith Smith, Wilmington,
Using Hotmail for business critical emails? What a joke! If your business is really that important, you shouldn't be relying on a free e-mail service which has absolutely no obligation to maintain any level of service.

I had Hotmail access yesterday 2/26, but not today 2/27. Why do they claim it's "FIXED" when obviously the problem still exists? Who do they think they're kidding? I'm glad I do not use Hotmail exclusively, only for some business emails that are not crucial, but it's frustrating none the less. I will not use them anymore.

I cannot take this sort of outage for my business again," wrote one Denver-based user. "This comes at a mission-critical time for me. Not a good story for Microsoft Live."
Anyone who relies on Hotmail in a business environment must have read the term "mission critical" in a "How to Succeed In Business" book.
