Gordon Brown is to embark on a personal crusade to help to bring down the soaring price of oil after announcing plans to travel to the Middle East to co-host an emergency meeting of leading oil producers.
The Prime Minister said that the only way to crack the problem, with the price hovering yesterday at $135 a barrel, was for governments to work together at an international level.
Mr Brown said that he had persuaded King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to host a summit in Jedda next weekend. “I strongly welcome this initiative and will travel to Jedda in order to launch it with King Abdullah,” Mr Brown said at his monthly press conference yesterday.
“I have proposed to the King that, if necessary, I will be happy to convene a follow-up summit at heads of government level, and have offered London as a venue,” he said.
The Prime Minister's push is part of a multi-pronged attack that he said was designed to reduce the world's “addiction to oil”.
His move came as the Treasury gave warning that oil prices could rise to $180 per barrel next year. It also said that world oil production would need to increase by 14 per cent — or 12 million barrels a day — from 86 million “to avoid a supply crunch” by 2015.
Mr Brown said energy prices would be at the top of his agenda with President Bush, who is visiting Britain next week. On Tuesday Mr Brown meets the Prime Minister of Norway, a country that is a key source of gas for Britain.
He also pledged to place rising commodity costs at the forefront of discussions in the forthcoming EU Council in Brussels, and the G8 summit scheduled for next month in Japan.
In recent months Mr Brown has appealed to the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) to increase supplies.

if we did the same as the french and block a port or two we would get lower tax but us in the uk drive our trucks slow and get put on a slip road in london we get on tv and we think that will do it .stand together keep it plesent but some one do somthing
nigel, folkstone, kent
He's going to advise the OPEC countries on how to raise taxation on oil in order to bring them into line with the UK.
Then when they meet in London OPEC are going to advise GB on what he should do to curb his tax, tax, tax obsession.
After both meetings oil wil be $200.00 a barrel.
Dave, Mold, Flintshire
How about halfing the tax on petrol and diesel insted of blaming it completly on opec, and while your at it sort out the intrest rate on morgages. the LABOUR govement have made it impossible to live in this country
pete, rochford, essex
Well he'd better start the 'Crusade' at his old stomping ground The Treasury - that's where the principle reason for the price of petrol is founded. Lower the petrol tax.
Donna Walker, Effingham, England
The fuel cost isn't actually the problem, it's the taxation, so how our dear PM is goig to get the Middle East to sort that one out is beyond me.
I see the US has been moaning about the price hike, but they are paying a hell of a lot less than us, the lucky sods!
Lisa, London,
I don't know why he bothers. The 9 DUP MPs don't have a say in the price of oil. How's he going to buy votes there. Is he going to promise Scotland to the Saudi's in exchange for them producing more oil?
John Goode, Welwyn Garden City, UK
A 'crusade' to the middle east - not sure how that will win friends etc
Jim, Burnley,
What a hero, the oil producers must tremble when they hear his name. It's always soembody elses fault, eh Gordon? Nothing to do with the huge amount of tax we pay!
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
Stuart
This is a joke as the UK Treasuy benefits when oil prices rise due to tax on N Sea oil. And we all now how much Brown loves his taxes.
Eddie Reader, birmingham, england
What rubbish.
If brown wanted to do something he would cut the tax on fuel.
Dave, London, England
LOL !
The cabinet and GB must wake up each morning thinking "What shall we do today to be seeing to be doing something?"
Lets see, "Housing? Oh yes We must build 3m homes"
Ummm "Expensive mortgages? Lets have a pow wow with the banks so they can stick two fingers up at us"
"Oil? etc etc
Jonathan, Coventry,
The man is a fool if he thinks we believe in anything he says or does. He is laughing all the way to the "bank" at the moment with the extra fuel duty we are all paying. The price of oil per barrel is not the problem, the problem is the extortionate amount of tax we pay on each litre.
Judes, Surrey,
He is trying to persuade the OPEC countries to reduce the oil prices, so he has a better margin for his own taxation in UK
Tony, Barnsley, uk
Once again, Brown, out of his depth, completely fails to understand the market (this time for oil). This desperate, irrelevant and ineffectual gesture will fail because it does nothing to tackle the root causes of commodity price inflation (a trend GB's policies as chancellor firmly underpinned).
Mark, London,
The price of oil is controlled by the city traders and not the oil producers. Mr Brown should talk to the hedge fund managers instead the oil producers.
david, oldham, uk
It is a big step entry for Mr Brown in the international politics. If he succeeds British people and the international community shall rank him as the savier of the world as they did to Sir Winston Churchill !
We British are behind him.
Dipak Das, Frimley, Surrey
He is clearly trying to use this as a distraction to 'fool' us into thinking the high price we pay at the pumps is everything to do with high cost of crude oil, while this may play a part in it the main reason is the rediculous amount of tax we pay on top!
'wool' 'over' and 'eyes' comes to mind.
James, Dunstable, England
He really does take us for complete idiots - he cannot make any difference by talking tough to OPEC and he knows it. He can, however, reduce the duty paid by general public
Liz Brown, Montmartin en Graignes,
He must think we and the oil producers are stupid. If Brown wants to reduce the fuel price he should reduce the 80% tax. If there was no tax petrol would be as cheap as chips. The oil producers are selling crude too cheaply, allowing Gordon Brown to tax it so heavily.
Jeffrey Ellis, Zurich, Switzerland
Is this a joke? Over half the cost of fuel at the pump in the UK is tax and Gordon is going on a 'crusade' against fuel cost? It must be a joke.
Stuart, Mississippi Canyon,
Brown's embarking on a personal crusade, he knows how to crack the oil price problem, he persuades, he proposes, he pushes, he pledges, he appeals. When this guy speaks the World listens - aren't we lucky to have him as our very own PM?
Gordon Alexander, Frome, UK
