The solution: You're right. For women of size 6 or below, there's very little on offer. A handful of high street stores make clothes under a size 8. Jesiré (stocked in John Lewis) goes down to a size 4, while Gap does an American size 0, the equivalent to a UK size 4.

Specialist petite ranges are your best bet. Petite Affair has a website and a catalogue (01275 474484 for a free copy), and produce pretty and feminine clothing at mid-range prices. They do sizes 6 to 16 and Debbie Major, Petite Affaire's managing director, says that they are planning to introduce size 4 (it seems you're not alone). We suggest their multiprint jersey dress, £49, for your son's graduation. It won't swamp a petite frame, ties under the bust and includes a waistband to give extra definition. The graphic print will focus the eye on the vivid colours and bold shapes, the sleeve length is flattering and the dress would look fantastic with a bright jacket. Quite the yummy mummy.
