I remember reading about a place in Delhi where the British Raj-era statues have been dumped. Is it possible to visit it? Neville Taylor, London
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: Yes: it's a forlorn spot just to the north of Old Delhi, which most guidebooks, and indeed taxi drivers, don't seem to know.
Best to find a driver who'll take you to the Civil Lines district where the British built new bungalows after the mutiny, to keep a safe distance away from the locals to Coronation Park. If drivers on the street can't help, the concierges at the big hotels should be able to assist finding a car.
There is a large patch of wasteland just to the south of the park, where you'll see a large plinth topped by an obelisk. This marks the spot where King George V sat to view the most grandiose Imperial pageant ever staged, the Delhi Durbar of 1911.
This was the third, and most spectacular of British-run Durbars held here, and where the King announced to a bemused India, that its capital was to be uprooted from Calcutta to Delhi.
Just to the side of this is a walled-off area - the statue cemetery. It was left horribly overgrown and neglected for decades, but there was a clean up in 2007.
Don't expect too much though, as many of the brick plinths are now empty. There are a handful of statues however, Imperial great and goods plonked unceremoniously in an enclosure with, ironically enough, a 60-foot high statue of George V for company. This used to occupy the grand canopied plinth at the far end of New Delhi's great Janpath (near the India Gate), which remains empty even today.
There is talk of a proper renovation with a visitors centre, but for now it's a forgotten place. You're bound to be the only person there.
