Sunday Times Readers' Rants
The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday
WE HAVE just returned from Istanbul. It’s a lovely city, but it’s completely ruined by unscrupulous taxi drivers. Meters, as if by magic, double the cost of the journey just a few yards from the hotel, and the drivers frequently attempt to substitute 1 lira notes for 10 lira ones. The sleight of hand was impressive. What’s more, they can be quite aggressive as they attempt to fleece tourists. A year ago, we were in Colombia. Quite frankly, I felt safer in the taxis there. We would never go to Turkey again. Mo Preston, Sheffield
ANOTHER journey, another new Ryanair charge. I recently booked flights to Venice with the airline over the phone and was charged £4.80 for using my debit card on a balance of £21 (£1.20 per passenger per flight). I knew that Ryanair charged for paying with credit cards (in fact, it’s a lot more, at £3.20 per passenger per flight), but in the past, using a debit card meant escaping a fee. And it’s not just because I booked over the phone – you are penalised if you use your debit card to book online. Mary Jones, North Wales
