EasyJet is allowing passengers to pay excess luggage 'fines' before arriving at the airport, claiming it will save their customers money.
The advance-purchase excess luggage charge is £15 per 3kgs, which easyJet says is a saving of £3 on check-in charges.
At the airport, the airline charges £6 per kg - but these charges can be paid in increments of 1kg, so it is still cheaper for a passenger whose bag is 2kg overweight to pay £12 at the airport instead of £15 in advance.
The new charges are listed alongside other extras, such as priority boarding and travel insurance, at the time of booking.
Passengers will have the option to pay the charges online or over the phone up to two hours before their flight (for the next month though it must be done at the time of booking if it is paid online).
The current hold baggage allowance for easyJet passengers is 20kg per bag, which compare's to Ryanair's 15kg and British Airways' 23kg. Passengers can pay up to £60 in advance in excess charges to carry bags up to a maximum weight of 32kg.
EasyJet currently allows passengers to carry one item of checked luggage of up to 20kg at no extra charge. Any other baggage, up to eight pieces, is charged at £5 per bag (or between £8-12 per bag if paid at the airport).
Far from being another channel of ancilliary revenue, easyJet claims it will save passengers money.
In a statement easyJet Product Development Manager Peter Gerstle said: "Extra weight pre-payment is the latest facility easyJet has introduced to save its passengers time and money."

Great car insurance deals online
easyjet's web page is no1, no other comes close, Mr Coffey must have been thinking about Ryan Air or Aer Lingus web page when posting his comment, and the staff are great as well

People should be weighted along with their luggage. It's the total weight that causes more fuel use. People need to be encouraged to take responsibility for their weight and not expect subsidies from those with more self control. If they don't like it they can use the roll on/roll off ferry.

Easyjet's website and online booking process is a mess now. Once it was crystal clear and easy to use. Now it is complicated, messy and does Easyjet no favours at all.

Autumn, maybe you should as it is the weight that is the issue here not the size. I you were a skinny tall person then the minimal extra price should not be too much to bear.
John, Egremont,
Donna - I presume you aren't very tall. Should I be punished for being very tall (something I have no control over) and therefore weighing a good deal more than you?
Perhaps we should take people's body fat percentage and base airfares on that?
Autumn, London,
I do think when check in the staff in nice airport is not a good image for the company.....I always travel with a vuiton bag ...the maximun weight being 12 kls ...last time they let me enter with a "ironic " smile and told me it is an exception!!
Easy Jet should look more carefully after the staf .

I think it is completely unfair the way this is assessed. In this day and age of political correctness noone dares to say that how much each passenger weighs should be considered! I only weigh 51kgs and have the same luggage allowance as someone who weighs up to 3 or 5 times more than me!
