The first ever Rough Guide to Accessible Britain has been published, offering a choice of days out around the country for disabled visitors.
The guide is packed with ideas that are manageable and simple to plan, and has been developed by Rough Guides in association with Motability Operations, which manages the Motability car scheme for disabled people in the UK.
The guide rates attractions for their accessibility and facilities, such as availability of hearing loops, powered scooters and accessible toilets.
Here’s a round up of the star attraction in each of the guide's ten categories:
1. Parks and Gardens - The Eden Project, Bodelva, St Austell, Cornwall
The Eden Project is one of the UK’s newest and highest-profile attractions. Laid out beneath vast, geodesic "Biomes", or eco-friendly conservatories, the diversity of the world’s plant-life is showcased.
There is plenty to explore outside in the landscaped grounds: giant sculpture, art and performance, as well as plants.
Special events throughout the year include an ice rink, with a special ice-chair for wheelchair users. Participation of disabled children and adults is encouraged at all special events, and a wheelchair-accessible platform is available at concerts and exhibitions.
2. Family Fun - Legoland, Winkfield Road, Windsor, Berkshire
Legoland is 95 per cent accessible to wheelchair users and has a positive attitude to disability that’s reflected not only in the services they offer but also in the can-do attitude of the staff.
Set in 72 acres of attractively landscaped grounds, the park is divided into a number of different zones, from Duploland for the smallest visitors to Adventure Land for the most intrepid.
The "Guide for Guests with Disabilities" provides a very helpful area-by-area breakdown of accessibility, including height restrictions, safety requirements and relevant information regarding noise or light levels.
