Wow, that first comment shows how far we have to go in environmental terms!
No matter how poor steel or wooden-framed windows are, if we are going to have double-glazed UPVC windows, they should be decent UPVC windows.
Although the globe is getting warmer, it still gets cold in temperate countries. This is called winter, and efficient insulation is very helpful to retain heat at such times.
Manufacturing energy efficient boilers add no more to emissions, pollution etc than making the old inefficient types, that would have to be made anyway to fit in new dwelling units, and replace old ones.
Michael Rodent, London,
The reason is to keep hotter temperatures out of the house when its hot and to keep the warmth in when its cold.
A example is the new buildings with glass using airconditioning in summer heavily in comparision to the older buildings which have traditional brickwork, so aiding in keeping the building cool, or retaining heat in during winter.
So insulation works both ways.
David, London, UK
Why do homes need better UPVC windows (part L compliant)
when any UPVC window is going to be better than steel or wooden framed single glazed units.
And why do we need more loft insulation and cavity wall insulation if the globe is getting warmer.
Surley manufacturing all these energy efficient boilers etc is adding to carbon emmissions anyway?
