A university is investigating after video evidence of Nazi style initiation ceremonies at its sports club came to light.
The University of Gloucestershire is trying to trace students filmed marching with plastic bags covering their faces, drinking, while under the instruction of a student dressed as a Nazi guard.
In chain-gang formation the students - who can be seen parading up a residential street with supermarket bags over their heads while drinking - line up and begin vomiting as another student in Nazi uniform barks orders.
Natalie Sutton, 20, a broadcast journalism student at the university who comes from Cheltenham, shot the footage. She used the film as part of her university assignment.
The initiation ceremony took place in Freshers’ week last year - a time notorious across university campuses for extreme tests of endurance and tests of capacity for alcohol for those joining sports teams and other societies.
Miss Sutton told the BBC that during her own initiation ceremony for the women’s hockey team she was forced to put fish in her bra and then eat it.
“We ended up in a dark basement where raw fish was stuffed down our bras and we were told to eat a nausea-inducing mixture of cat food, eggs and breakfast cereal topped with Bovril,” she said.
“After a lot of vomiting, we were taken upstairs to a car park and pelted with flour, washing-up liquid and eggs. People were crying and vomiting.”
The university, which bans student initiation ceremonies on campus, told Times Online they have not yet identified the students involved but they will bring disciplinary action against those responsible, even if they have since graduated.
Paul Drake, director of communications, said: “The university takes the issue of intimidation and bullying extremely seriously.
“Disciplinary action may be brought against those who are found to be leading initiation ceremonies and who continue to perpetuate unacceptable intimidatory and coercive practices, in line with the university’s student charter.
“This particular incident illustrates that we have more to do to eliminate poor student behaviour. It should be remembered however that this represents a small minority.”
In November 2006, first-year Exeter student Gavin Britton died from alcohol poisoning after drinking four vodkas, three pints of cider, a glass of wine and numerous sambucas before downing a pint of spirits as part of an initiation to join Exeter University’s golf club.
The incident led to many universities and unions banning such events on campus.
James Durant, president of Gloucestershire University Students’ Union, said: “The Students’ Union does not support initiation ceremonies and they have been banned on campus for many years.
“We go to great lengths to ensure our sports captains understand that initiation events that include intimidating or bullying behaviour will not be tolerated."
The National Union of Students (NUS) has called for a total ban on initiation ceremonies in UK universities.
Wes Streeting, NUS President, said: "We are totally opposed to student initiations. They put students at serious risk and exclude students who don't want to take part in that binge-drinking culture."

I would be very careful about saying a piece of video footage is "nazi style" even if it clearly is. I think there is precedent for that kind of thing.
Alex, Brighton, Sussex
I did the initiation at glos uni 6 years ago in my first and second year and it was the most memorable and best night of university. No one taking part is ever forced to stay and a third or forth year will always take you home once you've had enough. As usual its been blown out of all proportion
Chris, winchester, england
I admit I dressed up as Hitler at school in 1983 (riding boots, jodphurs, a whip and a not v convincing hat and moustache).
Will I be arrested next time i go to the UK?
another reason to never go back
someone else dressed up as Dracula. Will they be arrested for devil worship?
Kevin Lax, Shanghai, China
Nazi style!?!?!
I love the media...
We had the same problem in the forces about two years ago, a big campaign to stop initiation ceromonies as it was classed as bullying.
What it does is bring out the character in people, makes people feel welcomed. Its a good expected start to uni life!
Tim, Abingdon, England
Thankfully, this wasn't part of university life when I was there. We had lots of fun without having to be permanently drunk or imitate Nazis.
leila, manchester, uk
In what way is this Nazi style? Hitler did a lot of terrible things, but I'm pretty sure he never made his lieutenants march up and down in carrier bag hats, drinking cider and vomiting.
Jack, London,
this is mad you know! really
Leeroy Shakespeare, london,
so a bunch of students in silly clothes during Freshers week, got drunk and puked? And your point is what exactly?
Andy, Newcastle,
Initiations for clubs are to be expected, those who are put off by them would likely not like the rest of what goes on anyway and there is nothing wrong with binge drinking, we all do it ...but dressed as a Nazi? I fail to understand the mentality of someone who would think that is fun
James, Reading, England
Pete - what's your point, that it's normal? That students should be allowed to humiliate each other in whatever way they deem fit, because that's just what students do?
I'm at university now, and I'd be horrified if someone suggested an initiation ritual for a society.
Anna F, Cardiff, UK
The people stupid or weak minded enough to be pressured into these tasks deserve all they get. Have a bit of backbone and say NO, or if necessary use a dose of strong lingo. If you don't want to do something nobody should have the right / opportunity to persuade / bully you!
Stef, Liverpool, UK
Some people say people do it at their own free will.
I'm pretty sure they don't.
Now I can't understand how this can possibly be fun.
Has reason left mankind, or maybe more specific students?
That makes me glad that I only spend time at university for lectures and tutorials and then commute 30km.
D.C.M., Doncaster,
When I joined the University rugby team, my initian was so ludicrous that i immediately left the sports society and took my rugby playing elsewhere. Subsequently, the team lost a good player through this non-sensical rubbish. I wanted to play rugby, not prove I could be a lager-lout!
Richard, Coventry, UK
My hockey initation remains one of the most fun nights of my life. It's all a laugh and if you can't do it you can quit. The only people who struggle with it are the immature freshers who have never been away from their mothers before. They normally don't even attempt the chilli eating.
Dr Steve Petrosino, Leeds,
Our son is at Uni, like us 30 years ago. What astonished us was how much a drinking culture is embedded in society. Don't get me wrong, we had plenty of good nights out in the 70s. But every page of his Fresher week guide was written in "Your chance to get bladdered" - nothing else seems to matter.
William White, Crewe,
Oh dear, there are some people who are never happy letting young people learn that what they are told by adults just happens to be true ,because adults did it all before and made the same mistakes.Smacks o the Nanny State to me.
Robert Boyd, Derby, UK
It actually all sounds like quite a laugh. If you don't want to do it, don't! Where's the bullying? It's the bloody hockey team, not credit towards your degree!
Chris, Worthing, England
storm in a pint glass and a pathetic over-reaction by both the university and the NUS.
Pete W, Bristol, UK
What rubbish. Everyone doing these thinks it is hilarious (although plastic bags over heads is a bit stupid). At our university we were herded into a dark room, forced to drink unmentionable things, then made to parade naked through the local town whilst being pelted with water and flour. Great fun.
PSF, London, Uk
Ummm... are people completely stupid? People voluntarily submit themselves to this nonsense? Give someone a bit of authority and they can persuade people to do ANYTHING.
David Pritchard, Madrid, Spain
Oh, of course, that's not Nazi style. Well done for clearing that up.
Mickey, Shanghai,
So if he was dressed as ghengis khan would it be a Monghul style initiation?
Or how about beret's and stripey tops, would it be French style?
No it would not.
Dont hype the headline!
Pete, St Albans, England
so what! The war ended 60 odd years ago. Move on. Get a life.
Satnam Singh, stanion,
In my time at university the worst culprits were the rugby union team. When the players came in to a pub or the student bar it was a sure sign it was time to leave.
Steffy, London,
Actually, Kev, you'll find that public schools now take bullying far more seriously than state schools.
Bede, London,
Education makes them the top 1% of the population? At least we cant blame the ever targeted hoddies. This Country has a rot that has set in to the core and similarities with public school behaviour is further evidence. This behaviour has cost lives Pete so please dont be so flipant and get a job !
CK, Glostown, Glos
Just so we are all clear on this. All these sort of things go on and yet the student union was not aware of it? Sorry, but I find that hard to believe. How many of them have been through this sort of thing? It does not matter how big your uni is, if something like this is going on, people know.
Dave, Aberdeen,
I was involved in this type of thing about 15 years ago, as a 1st year through to 4th year student. Its all very harmless fun and in my opinion has be blown totally out of proportion.
Chris, Surrey, England
Every one of those Guys or Girls taking part in these traditional initiations chooses to do so at their own will! What is this country coming to! Man up Britain!
Some Schools have banned conkers for christ sake!
Lighten up!
James, London, UK
Just to say i go to the university of gloucestershire and have been an active member of the football team for 3 years now and although others have i have never undergone an initiation and have never been bullied to take one, some people are keen to do them and enjoy the stories the next day.
Ollie Burt, Cheltenham, England
There are sick perverted people in most organisations who mask their intentions to hurt and bully with words such as intiation and fun. Anyone with any common sense will know what happened at Deepcut. People in authority need to stop turning a blind eye and route out these sickos.
james, edinburgh, uk
There's a University of Gloucestershire?
Anna, London,
I think this is absolutely terrible - what has happened to the NUS. Arent' they supposed to represent students? At what meeting was it agreed that the NUS were to become overtly PC, boring and "yes" men and women. Shame on you NUS - represent your students and not the NUS.
James Griffin, London, London
I think its a bit of a waste of time to go to suck lengths to join a sports team.... Seems a bit over the top to me, whats the point ? Does showing you drink alot make you better at a sport, if you ask me it would make you alot worse off...... BAN IT
Brent, Preston, UK
University students getting drunk, being loud, doing everything to excess, never. Whatever next.!!!. The authorities will be complaining next that twenty something students are being irresponsible. Whats the world coming to. Happy days.
pete, birmingham, uk
It's not Nazi style is it, is public school style initiation while dressed as Nazis.
Kev, London,
