We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times

Debashis Chatterjee is professor, organisational behaviour, Indian Institute of Management, and Dean, Centre of Leadership, at the SP Jain Centre of Management, Singapore. Download our podcast to hear him discuss leadership, what it means and how managers can inspire change.
Key points:
1. Leadership is the metaphor through which we see the scope and aspirational aspect of a human being. Leaders should look at a person as a 'source' - someone who can create a solution that is unique, not just a resource who is doing a job.
2. Understand why people are reluctant to change. They don't like to be forced into change; leaders should create the context for people to change in their own time.
3. Introduce silence into the noise of the workplace. Silence and solitude is the best way to cultivate the intellect. Try to start a meeting with a few minutes' reflection. How much of what we are about to say really that valuable? A few moments of silence can give leverage in the quality of communication thereafter.
4. The three Cs of leadership:
- concentration: learning how to focus on an idea
- contribution: an action that isn't just for the self
- connection: is it possible to go beyond one's ego when communicating with others?
5. The distance between the mind and the heart has to bridged
