What is it? The Royal Navy makes up one third of our Armed Forces, which protect the people and interests of the UK. In addition to active military service, the Navy polices the world’s oceans to prevent international smuggling, drug trafficking, terrorism and illegal trade. It also helps to deliver humanitarian relief and protects UK ports and merchant ships. It has more than 37,000 personnel deployed throughout the world.
Are there opportunities for work experience? There are more than 200 university sponsorships and bursaries for those planning to join the Navy, with payments of between £1,500 and £4,000 per year of study. There are also 14 University Royal Naval Units providing students with weekly onshore training sessions during term-time plus weekend or vacation trips at sea.
What graduate jobs are on offer? The Navy recruits about 500 officers a year to work in engineering, warfare, logistics, medical services, the Royal Marines and the Fleet Air Arm. There is a range of roles available on Navy frigates, destroyers, assault ships, submarines and on its combat or support aircraft.
Where are the jobs? Officers begin their Navy career at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth but must be prepared to serve anywhere in the world upon completion of training. Royal Marines train at Lympstone in Devon.
What is the pay like? New graduates who join as officers can expect to earn at least £28,200, living costs are subsidised and there is six weeks paid leave a year plus additional allowances for those who work as aircrew or on submarines. A golden hello of £12,000 is available for certain graduate engineering roles.
How do you apply? The Navy has a demanding selection process culminating in a two-day Admiralty Interview Board that includes tests and group exercises. For details go to www.royalnavy.mod.uk
