'Golden' Brown

Sir, In a Government noted for spin and deception I have always considered that Gordon Brown stood for decency and integrity. However, his blatant manipulation of his “golden rule” (reports, leading article and Business, July 20) has undermined my regard for him.

Of course it matters whether he misses his target; it is important for the future of the country.

However, albeit with some difficulty, we can probably live with that failure.

I am less sure that we can live with a politician who changes his rule in order to pretend that he has met his objectives.

The Chancellor reminds me of the Irishman who, when asked for directions, replied: “You’re starting from the wrong place.”
