The late Paul Fentener van Vlissingen turned his family-owned company, SHV, into a global giant in energy, recycling and retail, while at the helm from 1984 to 1997. He retired to live on a Scottish estate until his death in 2006 from cancer. He set up the African Parks Foundation after meeting Nelson Mandela, spending ¤100m of his own fortune on the foundation, which took over management of Marakele National Park and now runs 10 parks in seven African nations. His conservation work is being carried on by his daughters, Alicia and Tannetta, worth £2.4 billion according to the Quote 500 Dutch rich list in late 2008.
