GREEN RANKING FOR 2009
Ranking: 15
Worth: £5.8bn
Green investment: Wind power
The son of an oil prospector, Philip Anschutz bought out his father in 1961. His big break came in 1971 when he bought a huge tract of land along the Utah-Wyoming border. In the early 1980s, the Anschutz Ranch, with its 1 billion barrel oil pocket, became the largest oil-field discovery in America since Prudhoe Bay in Alaska in 1968. He sold a half-interest in it to Mobil Oil for $500m in 1982. He then moved into railroads and telecommunications before venturing into the entertainment industry — he was responsible for bringing David Beckham to LA Galaxy and, having taken over the Millennium Dome, reopening it as the O2 arena in 2007. His Anschutz Corporation took over development of the TransWest Express Transmission Project — a $3 billion, 900-mile transmission line proposal designed to deliver wind-generated electricity from Wyoming to California, Arizona and Nevada. Another Anschutz company is developing a 2,000MW wind farm. With a £5.8 billion fortune in the Forbes 400 list, Anschutz can afford such investments.
