GREEN RANKING FOR 2009
Ranking: 51
Worth: £570m
Green investment: Wildlife conservation
Farmers’ son Brad Kelley founded Commonwealth Brands in 1990 to manufacture discount cigarettes such as USA Gold, Bull Durham, and Malibu. He sold up in 2001, netting $1 billion, and reinvested the proceeds in land. He now owns 1.7 million acres in New Mexico, Florida, and Texas. A noted wildlife conservationist, Kelley works with national zoos to breed “hoof-stock” and helps repatriate desert antelopes. He snapped up about 60,000 acres near Sarasota in Florida, where he breeds animals such as antelope and anoa, a miniature water buffalo native to Indonesia. His fortune was put at £870m by Forbes in its 2008 list of the 400 richest Americans. We clip that back to £570m with the fall in asset values.
