Rudd, 61, built a small car dealership into the Williams industrial conglomerate in the 1980s. When Williams was demerged in 2000, he took the reins at Nottingham-based automotive dealer Pendragon. He has also chaired the glass-maker Pilkington and the chemist Alliance Boots. He faces challenging times at BAA, where he became chairman last year — it may be forced to sell some of its airports by the Competition Commission. We can see a £2.8m Pendragon stake and others add up to £8m. But his fortune is reckoned easily to reach £40m.
