Ranking: 1446=
Worth: £50m
Source of wealth: Health clinics
Born in Uganda, Patel moved to India at the age of 10 before coming to Britain as a teenager. He trained as a doctor and practised for six years before quitting the NHS to work in the City. In 1988, he founded his first healthcare company, Court Cavendish, and by 2002, had come to run the Priory chain of psychiatric clinics, whose north London branch is now famous for its celebrity clients. Patel had an 8% stake in the business, which was sold for £875m to the Dutch bank ABN in 2005. Allowing for debt in the purchase, Patel, 53, should have made £45m from the sale. Other assets take him to £50m after tax.
