Edwards, 50, spent £1,000 of redundancy pay on a computer in 1989. He set up as an IT consultant and Smith, 44, later began working with him. The couple went on to marry and built Geneva Technology into a world leader in telecom billing systems. They sold out in 2001 to US company Convergys in an all-share deal which made them worth about £240m. The Convergys shares fell sharply when the dotcom bubble burst, however, cutting their stake to about £70m. We assume the pair held on to most of their stake or made at least the same in share sales. Edwards is a director of a small aviation business in Cambridge.
