From his modest base in the New Forest, Ratcliffe, 55, runs Ineos, a chemical firm with 17,000 staff in 17 countries. Ineos spent more than £500m last year buying chemical plants from Norsk Hydro and assets from BP. With hefty borrowings, an economic slowdown, higher energy costs and more competition from the Middle East, we cut Ineos’s value sharply to £2.5 billion . That leaves Ratcliffe’s stake at about £2.3 billion.
