Ecclestone, 77, has added another sporting interest to Formula One by taking over Championship football club Queens Park Rangers with Renault team boss Flavio Briatore (qv). He is chief executive of Alpha Prema, which owns F1, and has made his fortune from television rights and spin-offs. He netted £1.9 billion in 1999 from a bond issue and the sale of 75% of the business a year later. That sum was given over to Jersey-based trusts controlled by his Croatian wife Slavica, 49. Ecclestone is a big donor to charity, giving away about £50m a year , and his assets include a yacht, a Falcon jet and a hotel in Gstaad.
