Chelsea have Abramovich and now Arsenal have Usmanov, 54. The son of a former state prosecutor in Tashkent, now a Russian citizen, Usmanov is the largest shareholder with a 24.2% stake in the north London football club. He built his fortune through steel and iron ore mines and plans to float shares in his Metalloinvest business, which is Russia’s fifth largest steelmaker, in London in the next few years. His more recent investments in media, telecoms and banking suggest a fierce loyalty to Russian president Vladimir Putin. “He’s massively close to the Kremlin. He’s their investor,” said a steel trader who knows him. Usmanov is 12th in the latest Russian rich list produced by Finans magazine, with a fortune of £6.763 billion, while Forbes values him at £4.689 billion.
