Source of wealth: Care homes and industry
Tomlinson, 43, started his working life designing components for Cummins, the diesel engine maker. Twenty years ago he took over his parents’ business, Orchard Care Homes. As the company grew under his direction he set up a series of firms under his own LNT banner and moved into construction, aviation and, his true passion, motor sport. His Leeds-based LNT group is now made up of seven companies. They include LNT Construction, which builds care homes; CoolBlue, a provider of software for the care industry, and Basic Solutions, a household and chemicals business that trades under the Magic and Magichem brand names. Tomlinson also owns an executive helicopter leasing business. In 2005 he bought Ginetta Cars, the kit and sports car manufacturer. To mark the firm’s 50th anniversary, it is launching the Ginetta G50 sports car this year. Tomlinson also owns Team LNT, a race car development and racing team operation that runs the Panoz LMES and JLR Formula Ford teams. Tomlinson is himself a keen racing driver and fulfilled a lifetime ambition when he and his two co-drivers steered the Team LNT Panoz Esperante to first place, above, in the GT2 class of the Le Mans 24 hour race in 2006. Away from the track Tomlinson, who is married with four children, drives a Ginetta and can be seen using it to pick up pizzas for his family at the local takeaway. Last year he sold Orchard Care Homes to its management for £175m. The new owners will work with LNT Construction, an arrangement that is forecast to generate profits of £15m annually for the builder. Tomlinson owns 100% of LNT.
