Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton

Kadence, the specialist in business research and market analysis, has been carrying out a study of its own operation to ensure it is as green as it can be.
Committed to eliminating waste and saving energy through small but significant actions undertaken by everyone, the lead has come from the top with chief executive Simon Everard walking to work.
Indeed, our staff survey shows that the majority of people leave their cars at home, earning the firm a top 10 positive green score of 88%. That may be down to the fact that employees can shower and change once they get to the office (89%, a top 20 result).
The London-based company plans to move to a more energy-efficient building to ensure it does all it can to minimise its impact on the environment but there are plenty of other policies in place to encourage everyone to do their bit to save the planet now and in the future.
The environment is now a separate agenda item at monthly departmental meetings as well as the quarterly board meeting. All purchasing decisions have to take the environmental impact into account and, as a result, Kadence now orders stationery only once a month to reduce carbon emissions through fewer deliveries. Other small changes include making notepads from waste paper, using low-energy search engine Blackle and conducting quarterly internal staff surveys to monitor green attitudes and track behavioural change over time. Workplace signage is a constant reminder to the 60 staff members to think green and turn off computers or lights (80%).
Just in case it still slips their mind, though, computers automatically turn off when left for more than 10 minutes and pop-ups remind staff to switch them off when logging off. Employees think these environmental initiatives are worth the money invested in them (92%, a top 15 result) and say all this eco stuff doesn't stop them getting on with their jobs (a top three score of 90%).
Energy-efficiency training sessions are held for new joiners and there are refresher sessions for all existing employees, who receive regular communication on green issues (72%). Workers are aware of the firm's environmental policy (76%) and know what ISO 14001 certification is (73%). To keep the environment firmly on the agenda, though, representatives from each department sit on a green committee and are responsible for encouraging green behaviour and events such as the Tree-Athlon, a 5km run or walk, followed by the planting of a tree. There is also an annual award for the best environmental initiative or suggestion, with the winner receiving up to £200 towards the purchase of a new bike, travel pass or sports goods, plus quarterly "round of drinks" prizes for those getting the highest scores in the company's internal environmental survey.
Employees believe the firm's environmental commitments are very serious (75%) and that its environmental impact is improving (87%). The office isn't always too warm when the weather is cold (70%) and staff say colleagues think green (77%).
