Making a wind turbine from old computer parts and rigging up a power inverter and battery to store solar energy proved a winning home improvement project for Logica employee Venkateswaran Gopalakrishnan.
The Reading-based IT firm, as well as instigating clear green policies, recognises individual and group employee eco achievements with its environmental awards, which were were created last year in three categories: an environmental home project, for which Gopalakrishnan was the winner; an internal company project; and a client and Logica partnership project.
Logica aims to help clients transform their businesses into low-carbon operations and applies the same standards to itself. In the past year, it has moved from three London sites to one single office, resulting in less energy consumption by reducing the total number of bases from 33 to 31, and so diminishing its environmental impact.
Employees think Logica takes its environmental commitment very seriously, giving the company a 69% positive green score on this question. They say being green is an everyday consideration at work (61%), bosses are open to suggestions for improvements (67%) and Logica is getting better at protecting the environment (79%).
The company has removed screensavers from its computers and laptops, eliminating 110 tons of CO2 emissions in the past year. Its refurbishment of data centres has included free cooling, by means of using air from outside during the colder months instead of air conditioning systems, which has eliminated 370 tons of CO2 emissions within the past year.
Logica's teleconferencing provision has expanded by 53% in the past year, reducing business travel, and its company car provision now includes hybrid models. Our survey shows that employees are aware of the impact of their work-related travel (68%) but feel that green matters do not impede their ability to get on with their jobs (79%).
The company has increased its recycling facilities and has started to phase out desk bins to promote the use of centralised recycling and waste containers. Employees know where waste goes at work (75%) and, more specifically, where to place recycling matter (82%). Logica has also started working with one of its subcontractors to recycle and sell on redundant office furniture.
Since 2006, the firm has reduced its operational energy consumption by 3%, business air travel by 40%, road mileage by 28%, waste to landfill by 23% and paper consumption by 9%.
Employees agree that the firm meets its environmental targets year on year (a 62% positive green score) and believe that the way they work reduces its environmental impact (63%). When it comes to being green Logica is well run (66%), its workforce says.
