Providing office layouts that make the most of space, natural light, materials and ventilation has made Morgan Lovell one of the UK's leading business refurbishment, design and relocation specialists.

Environmental office design is at the heart of this organisation, which not only uses recycled plastic and timber from sustainable sources, but also exploits daylight and fresh air as well as energy-efficient technology.

London-based Morgan Lovell believes sustainability is the future which is why it has worked hard to make every part of its business as green as possible, from how employees work to its award-winning head office, all the way down to basic recycling.

Employees are aware of the environmental implications of the work they do, according to our survey, giving an 87% positive green score on this question. They say Morgan Lovell does everything it can to minimise its environmental impact (90%) and that its green commitments are very serious (96%), all top 10 scores nationally.

When it comes to being green, the office designer aims to go beyond industry standards. The firm is ISO 14001 certified, its entire supply chain is vetted for eco standards twice a year and employees' training is updated continuously. The staff are BRE Environmental Assessment Method (Breeam) accredited, which is the standard for best practice in sustainable design, and the firm's own headquarters received the highest Breeam rating ever for an office refurbishment in the UK.

Staff say the way they do their job reduces Morgan Lovell's eco impact (76%), that the firm always does what is best for the environment (85%), and they agree being green is an everyday consideration in the workplace (91%), all top 20 results in our survey.

In terms of its own efficiency, the company has invested in technology, including smart metering. Footprint-tracking software measures consumption across the business, while computers turn off automatically to save energy. Employees say Morgan Lovell opts for the most ecofriendly rather than the cheapest practices (85%) and targets are met year on year (83%).

Recycling both in the office and off-site is taken seriously. All the company's own waste streams are separated and staff training includes waste reduction. Project managers and subcontractors are audited annually and recycling facilities are mandatory on all sites.

Just one other organisation gets a better score for staff knowing where to put waste for recycling (99%).

Continually aiming to improve its performance means Morgan Lovell's office has become a testbed for the latest green products. The company regularly engages with suppliers to share ideas, spur innovation and establish best practice. The result is that employees think the firm is particularly well run (91%), putting it in fifth place.
