The food company behind brands including the Linda McCartney range and Soy Dream has developed a greener flavour for itself. Based in Luton, Hain Celestial has 590 employees in four manufacturing sites, producing “natural and organic” food and toiletries. In 2006, the firm recycled less than 9% of its waste despite generating almost 40 tons per week. Directors and senior managers then set an 85% reduction target in waste to landfill, and recycling has, in fact, increased from 9% to 93% in just over a year. Now leftover food powers a biogas plant, and staff are trained in conserving the renewable energy the factories use. People say the firm does a lot for the environment (a green score of 90%), does everything it can to minimise its impact (87%), meets its year-on-year targets (83%) and the green issues are an everyday consideration at work (90%). And in the employee survey its staff rank Hain as the 11th greenest company, 30 places higher than its position in our league table.
