We can’t reverse the damage already done to the environment, but we can stop it from becoming worse. That’s the view of RM Education, which set up a green team three years ago to identify initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint.
Workers say the company takes its environmental commitments very seriously, winning it a green score of 81%. The firm, based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, provides a wide range of educationally-focused information and communications technology (ICT) products and services for schools. Since 2005 it has introduced a number of measures to become greener and its car policy is constantly under review to drive down CO2 emissions. RM recently removed 4x4s from its fleet and added a dual-fuel car which can achieve 65 miles per gallon and is exempt from the London congestion charge. It has a car-sharing programme for employees too.
RM Education gets results of 78% and 74% respectively in our employee survey for being open to suggestions to becoming greener, and for sending the workforce regular updates on eco issues. Progress against the company’s environmental policy is communicated regularly (76%) and the 1,438 staff feel investment in such schemes is worthwhile (88%). They think green (83%) and employees even take home used ground coffee from the canteen for their gardens.
