Muntons’ malted ingredients help turn fields of golden barley into beers and biscuits — but without the environmental guilt. The Suffolk-based firm makes products for the food, baking and confectionery industries with a staff of 272 who say the business does everything it can to minimise its impact (a green score of 83%) and takes commitments to the environment seriously (88%). Muntons is involved in a climate change agreement scheme and has used Carbon Trust expertise in order to develop eco improvements. A project at its Stowmarket base should improve the energy efficiency of kilns by 7%. Employees don’t think green initiatives are a waste of money (93%) and nor does the company, which has reduced “food miles” with two maltings locations as close as possible to the sources of the raw materials. It has invested in pollution-reducing equipment and staff training, and reduced energy consumption by 1% and waste produced by 3% last year, with more than 99% of this recycled.
