Housebuilder Berkeley Homes shows its commitment to the environment by making its properties as energy efficient as possible. And as an employer it has built up a set of policies to enable its staff members to be more green in their everyday working lives too.
The company specialises in urban regeneration and the creation of sustainable communities. It creates developments on former industrial land to maximise the use of space in towns and cities, and as a consequence these are often located close to public transport and local amenities, reducing the need for residents to make car journeys. The firm’s projects include Chelsea Bridge Wharf in west London, which will transform a former railway freight siding into a new community development with a mix of new homes, offices, commercial units and a hotel.
Berkeley staff are the most clued up of all in our survey about their firm’s environmental policy, earning an impressive green score of 96%. They say the company’s environmental commitments are at the heart of how it operates and that it does everything it can to minimise its ecological impact (both 88%).
Workers think the company takes its environmental commitments very seriously (97%, a score bettered by only one other firm) and think investment in green initiatives is very worthwhile (91%, another top 10 score). As well as running a car-sharing scheme, the company encourages staff to use public transport (84%) and they have plenty of facilities to freshen up if they choose to run, cycle or walk to work (94%, ranking Berkeley Homes in the top three).
