Canary Wharf has one of the largest number of green roofs in the UK, thanks to eco-friendly construction company Canary Wharf Contractors Limited (CWCL). Grey (recycled) water and heat reclaim systems are among the green credentials of the firm behind the iconic tall buildings in London’s former dockyards.

Since it was founded in 1989 CWCL, part of the Canary Wharf Group, has constructed more space in London than any other property group. Prolific it is, but profligate with resources it’s not. Staff are very aware of the eco impact of the job they do, giving a green score of 79% in our employee survey.

CWCL last year won a Green Apple award (for environmental best practice) for innovation in construction. Recent projects have secured a 50% CO2 cut against 2006 building regulations and diverted 90% of construction waste from landfill.

The 300 employees, based at six UK sites, say their teams think green (81%) and that most people do not travel to work by car (74%). CWCL plans to increase the number of weekends it switches off everything in the office to achieve a low and zero carbon footprint by design.
