Greencare H2O is helping businesses turn back to the tap. The Kent-based firm was founded to address what it calls “the wasteful practice” of delivering bottled water to offices by offering plumbed-in coolers as an environmentally sound alternative. All of Greencare’s cups are biodegradable and clients include Manchester United football club, where the 400 staff drink 600 to 800 litres a day.
Workers at Greencare think it does a lot for the environment, giving it a green score of 92% in our employee survey. You can see why they feel that way: the bottled water industry in the UK generates more than 33,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions through transport a year— equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 6,000 homes. Britons consume about 1.5 billion litres of water each year from bottles made out of polyethylene terephthalate or PET — a plastic that takes up to 450 years to biodegrade. Workers say environmental commitments are at the heart of how the company works (94%) and that it always does what’s best for the environment (92%).
Adam Warren, the managing director, is committed to the environment and the firm’s green initiatives are not a waste of money (both 97%, ranking second and first respectively). They believe the company doesn’t produce too much waste (82%) and think green at home, thanks to their training at work (86%). But staff say there are few facilities for those who cycle, walk or run to work, earning a green score of just 36%.
Greencare, which has 50 staff, is carbon neutral and is involved in a clean water project in Africa.
