London-based IT specialist Logica helps a range of industries achieve their goals through intelligent use of technology, and now its staff are using their common sense to reduce their own firm’s energy consumption.
Two years ago the company introduced an environmental campaign to reduce its carbon footprint based on the three Rs — reduce, reuse and recycle. A cornerstone of the campaign was the “switch off!” initiative aimed at reducing energy use by ensuring that facilities are powered down outside working hours. Electrical equipment is now labelled with “switch off!” stickers to remind people to turn off computers and posters have been placed around the firm’s 38 offices to educate staff on the need to turn off lights and equipment when not in use.
Other initiatives have included encouraging conferencing technology to reduce business travel, upgrading office equipment to fewer and more energy-efficient devices, making double-sided printing standard, aiming for less toner use, switching to more sustainable sources of electricity and, where possible, replacing disposable items with reusable ones such as plates and cutlery in staff restaurants. In addition, printing paper is sourced from Forest Stewardship Council certified sustainable forests.
Volunteer environmental ambassadors have helped roll out initiatives and employees are clearly on board, which is reflected in our staff survey. Workers back investment in eco initiatives, earning the firm a green score of 79%. They consider the environmental impact of work-related travel (60%) and say green stuff doesn’t interfere with their job (78%).
The result of all Logica’s efforts was an overall 30% cut in business air travel and a 10% reduction in road mileage undertaken in 2007.
Staff awareness has also increased with energy efficiency seminars and presentations. Employees know where to put waste for recycling (76%), say workplace signage is a constant reminder to think green (60%) and believe there are sufficient changing room facilities for people who want to walk, run or cycle to work (70%).
