Sheron has been shortlisted because she is committed to delivering high quality services to minority and socially disadvantaged communities. She was inspired to turn the organisation around and ensure it delivers the values it was built on.
Sheron’s vision is to grow the agency's asset base by increasing the number of homes Arhag own from 450 to approximately 700 and increase wholly owned and managed properties from just over 700 to 1000. Sheron would also like to use contacts and partnerships to open up work experience opportunities to refugees and migrants which will result in offers of employment in the housing sector.
Arhag provides housing and amenities for low income households who are homeless or in housing need. Arhag is a not-for-profit organisation initially set up in 1979 as a campaign group to challenge the housing disadvantages experienced by African refugees and migrants. Arhag now provides housing and support to people from all countries and continents but remains committed to improving the social and economic well-being of those who face disadvantages because of their refugee or migration status.
“A significant proportion of the tenants we house are migrants or people who have been through the asylum or refugee process. At times we offer the first stable and secure home to these vulnerable groups which allows them to establish roots and become part of a wider community,” says Sheron.
Turnover £3,711,000 and employs 20 people.
Juliet Davenport, Good Energy Group
Juliet Davenport is the chief executive of Good Energy. She has been shortlisted because she set up Good Energy to address the issue of burning fossil fuels to generate electricity as one of the biggest sources of CO2 emissions and a major contributor to climate change. And to prove to government that supplying a 100 per cent renewable electricity tariff is possible, and can make a difference. Juliet is a previous WEBA winner.
Good Energy provides customers with low carbon products and services and are the UK's only 100 per cent renewable electricity supplier. 100 per cent of its electricity comes from renewable sources. This power is supplied by combining electricity generated from one wind farm in Cornwall with a growing community of more than 500 independent renewable electricity generators across the UK. Good Energy also supplies energy efficient and low carbon products online through the Good Energy shop.
Its main business activities include encouraging people to switch to a 100 per cent renewable electricity tariff, to improve energy efficiency in their homes, and where possible to generate their own renewable energy.
Good Energy also have schemes to encourage people to generate their own electricity and to earn money at the same time – HomeGen pays domestic customers for the renewable electricity they produce in the home.
“Good Energy’s vision is to change the energy landscape. We want every community and every business to play a part in this. We want to see people not simply buying from one central supplier, but where they can we want them to generate their own power for their own consumption and sell the surplus,” she says.
No of employees – 60 people. Turnover £12.8m in 2007/8.
