In the largest democracy in the world there will always be poverty, any country you go to there is poverty only that the media show third world/developing countries poorest, how many poor people are there in the UK who live on the breadline, quite alot only its never seen. Be proud to be Indian.
Nilesh Patel, London, UK
Its sad that everyone is looking at their income and not what they are doing to the society. Those companies have created thousnads of jobs, wealth, forex and tax to the govt. They are successfull entrepreneurs who have emerged as leaders and made India proud. They are the people who built world class organisations and many people from western countries are working in India for them.
Most importantly, they never left the India to western countries for 'easy money'. We should be proud of them.

i agree with joe's comments. Its sad that rather than distributing wealth, the government turns a blind eye to the poor and majority of india's wealth is tied up with a few bunch of billionaires...imagine if all this was spread amongt the poorest...it would change their lives.
Shame on India.
Joan Hartman, bradford, uk
and what do all these billionaires do with their money? charity? na na big NO....expansion!!! I cant beleive in a country that claims to have all the meditational and spiritual answers to modern problems of greed for money, alcohol, power etc hasnt sorted its own crap out. No wonder talented people like me , haha, have to search for bread in other countries.

Great..some 99% of the wealth held by 1% of the population, while kids play among the sewers of Bombay..what a brilliant way to organise a society!

Who are the Ruia Brothers?

Lakshmi Mittal above, looks very much like Bill Gates.

What happened to Mr. Narayan Murthy. Is he not that rich?

The Tata's are not on this list because they do not have control over the Tata conglomerate.
Ratan Tata may run the business started off by one of his four fathers but he does not hold a significant stake in the business.
Although No.9 Pollonji Mistry is quite a substantial stakeholder in the company.
Amar Rashid, Birmingham, England
I am surprised that the Tata family is not on this list.
What happened to the poor old Tatas?
