Brandeis University near Boston, Massachusetts, is one of the youngest private research universities in the US, founded in 1948, and is the only nonsectarian Jewish-sponsored college or university in the country. Its International Business School has at its heart the study of globalisation.

Vital statistics. The school looks for GMAT scores in the 600s and most students have two or more years of work experience. The Brandeis MBA focuses heavily on international issues and students choose from three “concentrations”: business, finance and economic policy. A typical study programme includes microeconomics, the global economic environment, financial theory, global marketing strategy and competition and strategy. Tuition for 2006-07 cost $32,951 (about £17,000) but it is likely to have increased slightly for next year.

International opportunities. Many students spend the autumn term of their second year abroad – the school has exchange relationships with 20 schools around the world.

Rankings. The school is 60th in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Which MBA? global rankings and 38th for student opportunity in the Beyond Grey Pinstripes Global 100 rankings.
