Newcastle University Business School (NUBS) – not to be confused with Newcastle Business School, which is at nearby Northumbria University – is based in a modern building overlooking St James’ Park, meaning that students are just a free kick away from Newcastle United’s home ground. The school offers small, experienced classes; the average annual intake on the full-time programme is 40 students with an average age of 30.
Vital statistics. Applicants need at least three years’ work experience – most have between seven and eight – and a minimum GMAT score of 550. MBA candidates take 11 compulsory modules on the 12-month programme. These include managing information; leading change; the global business environment; and operations management. Students also take three electives from options published in the first semester. Tuition for 2008-09 is £15,950.
Ranking. NUBS is 98th in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Which MBA? guide 2007.
Work experience. Students spend a week with a host organisation working on a real business project as part of the compulsory management consultancy module.
Professional development. Psychometric tests, presentation skills, self-awareness training and other aspects of personal development are another compulsory part of the programme. Additionally, guest speakers cover topics such as networking, managing career expectations and the UK job market.
Scholarship opportunities. Graduates of Newcastle University who are funding their own study are entitled to a 10 per cent discount; the school is also recognised by the Chevening Scholarship programme for international students.
Application deadline: by the end of July for the programme starting in September
