We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times
* More than 900 students from 94 universities have applied for the new City Solicitors’ Educational Trust summer school to be held this July, four times the expected level.
The CSET summer school was launched last November when a group of the City’s leading law firms announced that they had joined to launch the school, a way of encouraging students from diverse backgrounds to think about a law career. Of this year's 923 applicants, 100 will be chosen to attend the intensive one-week residential course at Imperial College, London.
Howard Jacobs, the chairman of CSET, said: “Given that this is the first year of the summer school, we had not expected anything like this number of applications. Bearing in mind that each applicant has to complete an online application as well as an online psychometric test taking 30 minutes, the level of interest is truly outstanding — and unprecedented for a programme in its first year.”
* The University of Dundee is offering all law students the chance to become qualified to practise in all three of the UK’s jurisdictions. Dundee is already the only law school in the UK to offer degree programmes in both Scots and English law.
Now, from September, students on the Scots Bachelor of Law (LLB) programme will be able to pursue a course that allows them to take all the professional subjects required by the Law Societies of Scotland, England and Wales, and Northern Ireland as prerequisites for qualifying in each country.
Stuart Cross, senior lecturer in the school of law at Dundee, said: “This will open new avenues for them as they set out on their careers. It makes it far easier for graduates with all the required subjects to become fully qualified as a solicitor in multiple jurisdictions, offering them flexibility across the UK.”
In a second move, the school of law has created a joint masters programme with the law faculty at the University of Cergy-Pontoise in France. Students will be taught through English on a wide range of commercial law subjects from both a common law and civil law perspective. www.dundee.ac.uk/law
* Paralegals must now be registered with the Law Society of Scotland under a scheme agreed between the society and the Scottish Paralegal Association. There are about 10,000 paralegals in Scotland.
Neil Stevenson, head of strategic change at the society, said: “The idea is that paralegals will be registered and regulated by the society, receiving the professional recognition, career opportunities and ongoing training they deserve.”
The society is also working with the Scottish Qualifications Authority, which is establishing nationally accredited qualifications for paralegals.
* Women students on the solicitors' Legal Practice Course can join the Association of Women Solicitors (free of charge) after changes to its constitution.
The association, which is recognised by the Law Society, aims to represent and promote women’s interests in the profession through a programme of educational, business and social activities. It has almost 18,000 members.
