I have recently started reading Law (LLB) at Manchester Metropolitan University. I would like to become a barrister, however I am unsure how realistic that is. I obtained an A at A-level law but did not do so well in my other two A-levels. Studying at a met and with just one decent A-level in the subject that I have always enjoyed studying, what are my chances?
You are right to think seriously about your chances of success at the Bar, which is immensely competitive. Having weaker A-levels will put you at a disadvantage when competing with others who have straight As. However, the importance chambers place on the university attended less clear; a trawl through barristers’ backgrounds will show a large number of Oxbridge and "old" universities, but this is definitely not a reason to give up.
If you really want to be a barrister, then there are things you can do to maximise your chances and, as long as you don’t rule out a plan B, what have you lose? Key things you should focus on are:
* Get the best grades possible while at university. A first in your law degree will get you noticed, no matter which university you attend, and will help overcome blips at A level.
* Get experience. Work in a law firm over the summer and apply for mini-pupillages. In addition, there may be voluntary organisations or pro bono schemes at your university. Take any opportunities that arise, as this will help you decide the type of law you want to do, develop your skills and show your enthusiasm.
* Start to think about the area(s) of law in which you wish to work. All chambers want good academic attainment from candidates but, traditionally, there has been more flexibility in areas such as crime than, for example, in corporate or chancery work. Also, the sooner you make a decision, the sooner you can start building up the relevant skills and experiences.
* Get involved in mooting and debating at university. The ability to construct and win an argument, especially orally and in public, is central the work of most barristers – so you want to show a flare for this.
This is not an exhaustive list and you need to keep your progress under review – if you’re not heading for top marks at university or you don’t get start gaining the experience it may be time to reassess where you want to go.

Jas, Leicester,
Does it matter what university you attend? It is still the same degree! I am thoroughly confused.

Why become a barrister with all the stress and financial risk involved when you coulf qualify as a Solicitor-Advocate?!
BVC Student, London,
This is a very good answer, however I am at one of the "old universities" and many of my friends are at Oxbridge. Remember that everyone else has been doing what is listed above, including those at top universities. Do whatever you can to stand out, whatever kind of relevant work experience you can get, and any experience which demonstrates your leadership skills, your handling of responsibility under pressure, etc. Also, if possible, try to attend some dinners at the Inns. I am in the third term of my first year, and have attended three. This sounds crazy I know, but speaking to udges QCs and recently qualified barristers really gave me a great insight into the bar. If you can't get information on this, check out the websites of the Inns, find out where the next one is being held, and write to them asking for information if your university is of no help. Other mets, and newer universities were all present as well as the old ones. It was a complete mix, so you should be able to attend!
