What are the main challenges in such a case, including having to read both books in such detail?
Certainly, one is an easier read than the other. I have also had to learn a lot about early Christian history, which was not an an easy study. Press interest has been massive and I’ve had to take care not to get frustrated by commentary that has come from “mischievous” briefing.
What was your most memorable experience as a lawyer?
Winning a musical copyright case, Sawkins v Hyperion. My client was a retired music academic who could not afford to sue a record company which, despite his requests not to, had made and sold a CD using his musical score. The subject matter of Baroque music was fascinating but the personal importance of the case to the client and the much-hyped consequences to the record industry made the experience memorable. As the legal team did the case on a conditional fee agreement, there was added risk for all concerned.
Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?
Apart from my family, it would be a tie between Patricia Wilmer, my university tutor, and Felicity Given, my English teacher at school. They did what only the best teachers do — took the time to find out my strengths and weaknesses and encouraged me to focus on what I really wanted to do.
Why did you become a lawyer?
During my first mini-pupillage I sat in a trial that involved sex, drugs, and significant amounts of violence: the life of a barrister seemed exciting. This led to other mini-pupillages where I became aware of the detailed forensic analysis of the law and facts often demanded of a barrister. I saw this as a challenge that would keep my interest long-term.
What would your advice be to anyone wanting a career in law?
Work experience is crucial. It will give you a feel for the day-to-day reality of the job. Also, it introduces you to the firm or chambers and gives them a chance to assess your abilities.
Where do you see yourself in ten years’?
The more time I spend in the law, the more I realise how little I know. I hope, one day, to turn the corner. So, I may well be doing the same sort of things as now, except being (hopefully) better at them, and also trying to spend more time pursuing interests outside work. In ten years’ I hope to have achieved the perfect balance.
