MICHAEL McKEVITT
McKevitt, 59, from Blackrock, Co Louth, is serving a 20-year sentence in Portlaoise prison in the Irish Republic for organising Real IRA terrorism. He broke away from the Provisional IRA in 1997, having been responsible for the sourcing and storage of weapons. McKevitt led a faction away from the Provisional IRA to form the Real IRA after he failed to force a return to a military campaign against British rule in Northern Ireland. In 2003 McKevitt was found guilty in the Special Criminal Court in Dublin of directing terrorism. The offence was created by the State in response to the Omagh bombing. He lost an appeal against his conviction last year.
COLM MURPHY
The builder and publican from Dundalk, now 56, was found guilty in 2002 at the Special Criminal Court, Dublin, of conspiring to cause the Omagh bombing. His conviction was subsequently quashed and he is awaiting a retrial. Mr Justice Morgan said he was satisfied that he was an active member of another republican splinter group — the Continuity IRA — at the time of the Omagh bombing. The judge described the attack as a joint enterprise between Continuity IRA and Real IRA members. The judge called him a dedicated terrorist who had been an active participant in carrying out terrorist attacks over a long period.
LIAM CAMPBELL
The 46-year-old farmer from Dundalk, Co Louth, is in custody in Northern Irelnd. He was arrested last month and is facing an extradition request by Lithuania on arms smuggling charges. He was jailed in the Republic in 2004 for membership of the Real IRA. According to Mr Justice Morgan, he was a member of the army council of the Real IRA. He instructed lawyers to defend him in the civil action but withdrew them. Lithuania wants him in connection with a foiled plot to bring arms and explosives into Ireland to support the Real IRA’s campaign.
SEAMUS DALY
The builder from Cullaville, Co Monaghan, was described during the civil case as a Real IRA foot soldier. He was sentenced to 31/2 years in jail in the Irish Republic in 2004 after admitting membership of the illegal organisation. The judge said he was satisfied that Daly, 34, was in possession of one of the two phones that, trace records indicate, were used by the occupants of the bomb car and the getaway car on the day of the attack. The judge said that Daly’s failure to provide an answer to the evidence before the court supported the case against him.
