How DNA proved that Mark Dixie murdered Sally Anne Bowman

Mark Dixie was brought to justice for the murder of Sally Anne Bowman by chance when he was arrested nine months after her death.

He was held in 2006 after a scuffle over a World Cup match at the Ye Olde Six Bells pub in Surrey, where he was a chef. Police had taken DNA from 1,700 men who volunteered for screening as part of the investigation into the murder of Ms Bowman, whose partly clothed body was left in a pool of blood in Croydon, South London, but the screening produced nothing.

The scuffle was too minor for the police to take action against Dixie, but his DNA matched a sample from Ms Bowman, on whom he had forced himself as she lay dying from seven stab wounds. The case led to calls for a national DNA database in the hope that similar matches would be flagged up.

The officer who led the investigation of Ms Bowman’s murder said that it would have been solved within 24 hours if there had been a DNA database.
