First place: Hannah Klein has just graduated with first class honours from Bristol University, reading politics and French. She spent the year abroad component of her degree working as a UN Monitor for the International Service for Human Rights in Geneva. She is about to start reading Law as a Senior Status student at Cambridge University. She spent this summer studying Arabic and working as a volunteer caseworker with the legal charity, Inquest.
Joint second: Aba Osunsade is a final year undergraduate at the London School of Economics, studying government and economics. In her time at the LSE she has served as a senior editor of The Beaver, the newspaper of the LSE students' union and the most highly circulated student weekly broadsheet in London.
Joint second: Annabel Lee has just graduated from Oxford with a BA in Jurisprudence and is about to start the LLM course (specialising in human rights law) at UCL. She has just returned from Nepal where she spent the summer teaching English to underprivileged children in a state school for orphans and street children.
Runners-up:
Ali Vass graduated from Edinburgh in 2005 with a First in Philosophy. She then undertook a Master of Music at Newcastle and is currently studying the GDL at BPP in London. She also works as a musician and music teacher and plans to go on to study the BVC and go to the Bar.
Simon Purkis studied Classics at Cambridge University before converting to law. He has just completed the Bar Vocational Course at the College of Law in Birmingham and is currently working as a legal costs negotiator, before starting as a pupil at Pump Court Chambers in October next year.
Terry McGuinness is a student on the Bar Vocational Course at Nottingham Law School and will start pupillage at Tooks Chambers in October 2009. He graduated with a law degree from Queen's University Belfast in 2004 and with a masters degree in international law from the University of Durham in 2006. He has been a volunteer youth mentor since 2003 as part of the Youth Empowerment Scheme in Belfast, a charity that promotes social inclusion and active citizenship amongst school children and university students.
