Richard Welfare, a corporate partner at Lovells LLP, headed the team that provided legal advice and support pro bono for Team GB at the Paralympics in Beijing. He also assisted Mike Brace, chairman and president of the UK’s Paralympics Association, and Tim Reddish, performance director of disability swimming, in carrying the torch at the opening ceremony.
How did you get this role and what were the main challenges?
We were introduced to the guys from the British Paralympic Association (BPA) by Yasmin Waljee, our pro bono officer, and were bowled over by their enthusiasm and dedication. We have been able to help with a number of projects including athlete agreements, kit supply and television advertising. Sometimes the deadlines are rather tight — but we have so many lawyers who want to work with the BPA that we can always meet timelines.
What was your worst day as a lawyer?
Having just made partner, general counsel at one of my key clients asked if I could give her a lift to her nearby hotel after a meeting. Not only was I driving a filthy, very old VW Golf but that morning, the passenger window had stuck in full wind-down mode. While she declined the offer of a plastic bag to put on the seat before she sat down, she froze for 20 minutes. I upgraded my car soon afterwards.
What was your most memorable experience as a lawyer?
My recent trip to Beijing rates pretty highly. It was, of course, an honour and a privilege to take part in carrying the torch (and having to convince the Chinese officials that I was a genuine guide and not a Free Tibet protester to join the course).
Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?
My wife and three-year-old daughter play a huge part in my life. However bad the day at the office might have been, they can always make me smile and remind me that there is more to life than timesheets, bills and targets. From a work perspective, I’ve learnt pretty much everything I know from Andrew Skipper (now corporate global pratice team leader).
Why did you become a lawyer?
Having not considered career options until my modern history final exams were fast approaching, I took a year out and managed to secure only two job offers — one loading fertiliser, the other as outdoor clerk for a local law firm. Clearly, I gave the fertiliser job my best shot but resigned by noon on the first day — the rest is history . . . .
What would your advice be to anyone wanting a career in law?
Work hard to study the law but focus on other skills as well — the role of a lawyer, in practice, involves numerous skills and strengths including drafting, communication and teamwork.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
Hopefully still working with my superb colleagues at this firm, probably with far more grey hairs and an expanded waistline.
