* The Faculty of Laws at University College London has appointed two professors of property law.
Robert Chambers and James Penner will both take up their posts in September this year.
Chambers is a leading authority in the law of trusts, particularly resulting and constructive trusts. He trained as a barrister and solicitor in Alberta, Canada, before embarking on an academic career that spans posts at the University of Melbourne, the University of Alberta and King’s College London.
Penner, who was educated at Toronto and Oxford universities, has also taught at King’s College London and specialises in the philosophy of property. Next year he is due to serve as a visiting professor at the University of Tel Aviv.
He is currently working on a book entitled The Property Fetish: A Philosophical Betrayal of Practical Reason.
* Old Square Chambers has boosted its employment capability with the recruitment of Robin White, who will join the set on May 6 from Farrar’s Building.
White was called to the Bar in 1995 having trained as a scientist and worked as a manager in the transport sector. His practice covers the gamut of employment law and he makes regular appearances in courts and tribunals across the UK, including in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Old Square Chambers counts employment as one of its key practice areas. Its employment team has 43 members.
John Hendy QC, head of chambers, said: “Robin is an excellent addition to our employment team. The fact that we have recruited someone of his ability and standing into the middle order of chambers’ range of call shows how we are regarded at the Bar and in the profession generally.”
* Rebecca Glazebrook has joined Barlow Robbins, which is based in the South East, as a corporate partner.
The move represents something of a homecoming for Glazebrook as she trained at Barlow Robbins, a 24-partner firm with offices in Guildford, Woking and Godalming.
On qualifying as an assistant in 2000, she spent five years at the firm before joining Paul Davidson Taylor Solicitors, which is based in Horsham, where she was made a partner.
At Barlow Robbins she joins the business services group, which has ten partners and 13 other fee-earners.
Christine Goodyear, who heads the business services group, said: “This is the second major hire to the team this year and reflects the growth in demand for specialist corporate expertise from our broad-ranging client base.”
* Nina Grahame, who specialises in criminal advocacy, has joined Garden Court North, the Manchester-based chambers.
She is making the move from 2 Hare Court, which is based in London.
Garden Court North focuses on civil liberties work, covering crime, civil and prison law.
Grahame was called to the Bar in 1993 and has appeared as leading junior in manslaughter, drugs and fraud cases, as well as cases involving serious violence and sexual impropriety.
Although she will be based in Manchester, she will continue to practice in the South as well as the North.
Sarah Wright, senior clerk at Garden Court North, said: “Nina brings further depth to our crime team of 15 practitioners.”
