One of the powerful lawyers within the backroom machinery of government, Anthony Inglese, 56, was recently appointed general counsel and solicitor for Revenue & Customs. He was previously Director-General of legal services for the Department of Trade and Industry — a post that he was appointed to in January 2002. A barrister by background, he was called to the Bar in 1976. His career has been in the Government legal service, where he has held various posts — he has served in the Home Office and Legal Secretariat to the Law Officers, and was legal adviser to the Office of Fair Trading and to the Ministry of Defence. From 1997 to 2001 he was deputy head of the Treasury Solicitor’s Department. Born in 1951 in North Kensington, his grandparents were all Italian. The Inglese family lived in North Kensington for the first five years of his life before moving to Harrow: he went to school in Wealdstone, then studied law at Cambridge University. He is passionate about his job and speaks regularly to students on a career in the Government Legal Service. He supports Watford FC and enjoys relaxing at Champneys and writing and starring in community pantomimes.
