What were the main challenges in such a case and the implications? The main challenge is summoning sufficient stamina and resources to last the course. A case of this nature relies completely on a team effort; this particular case began with almost no admissible evidence at the time of arrest and yet led to a guilty plea by Mr Barot. That is the result of a model investigation by the Police Counter-Terrorism Command, the work of my colleagues in the CPS Counter-Terrorism Division and our excellent team of counsel. My challenge was to contribute as best as I was able.

What was your worst day as a lawyer? There are many difficult times for a criminal lawyer: in defence, dealing with clients and their families in extremis; and as a prosecutor, dealing with victims, witnesses and communities who feel that they have been denied justice. In the CPS we work closely with the victims of crime and their experiences tend to put my difficulties into perspective.

What was your most memorable experience as a lawyer? After five years working on the Counter-Terrorism Division, there are too many to mention; although on a personal level meeting and working with the family of Detective Constable Stephen Oake (who was murdered during a police raid in 2003) during the trial of Kamel Bourgass is something that I shall always remember. Their dignity, strength and generosity of spirit was remarkable and a fitting tribute to Stephen himself.

Who has been the most influential person in your life and why? I have learnt so much from my family, friends and colleagues. My mother, who taught me to speak up. My father, who taught me my love of music, laughter and the law. And the greats: McCartney, Marley and, until his move to Everton, Andy Johnson: all had the ability to make me sing with joy.

Why did you become a lawyer? My dad was a legendary managing clerk in a London firm. From as early as I can remember I would sit in our kitchen and he’d tell me about his latest cases: I thought there was nothing I would rather do. As I got older I realised there was nothing else I could do.

What would your advice be to anyone wanting a career in law? Don’t spend so much time in the kitchen with your dad! No, seriously, I would say choose your specialism carefully; while crime doesn’t pay, it’s certainly a fascinating field with which to work.

Where do you see yourself in ten years’ time? Still bemoaning the demise of the Premier League as a competition, or manager of England picking my boy (or possibly my daughter) as captain for the 2016 World Cup final.
