A multibillion-euro Swiss contract to buy natural gas from Iran has provoked threats from Washington, protests from Jewish groups and fuelled mounting concern about Europe's energy security.
The deal between the Zurich utility Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft Laufenburg (EGL) and National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) would bring gas from Iran to Europe as early as next year, the Swiss company said.
The contract, worth between €10 billion (£7.8 billion) and €20 billion, was signed last week in Tehran in the presence of Micheline Calmy-Rey, the Swiss Foreign Minister, and President Ahmadinejad.
However, the deal to supply 5.5 billion cubic metres of gas per year for up to 25 years was condemned by the US State Department, which said that it would investigate the deal's compliance with the Iran Sanctions Act.
“We don't think that now is the time for people to be investing in Iran, not only in its petroleum or natural gas area, but in any sector of its economy,” a State Department spokesman said.
Israel also voiced a protest, calling Ms Calmy-Rey's visit to Tehran an “act unfriendly to Israel”. Jewish organisations in Switzerland said that they were disappointed with the Swiss Government's support for the gas contract.
Ms Calmy-Rey's decision to wear a headscarf during the signing ceremony brought her condemnation in parts of the Swiss media, which described her attire as that of a submissive woman.
“Calmy-Rey defends the veil of discord,” was the headline in Tribune de Geneve on her return to Switzerland.
Christian Democrat opponents of Ms Calmy-Rey accused her of an “embarrassing prostration”, while Liliane Maury Pasquier, a fellow Social Democrat, asked: “Where is the solidarity with the women who fight against wearing the headscarf?”
The Foreign Minister was robust in her defence of the gas deal and swept aside American criticism: “Switzerland is an independent country that has its own strategic interests to defend,” Ms Calmy-Rey said.
Sources within the Swiss Foreign Ministry also pointed to America's continuing critique of Europe's dependence on Russian gas. “After this deal, we will be well diversified, with a third from the North Sea, a third from Russia and a third from Iran,” a source said.
EGL said the an initial delivery of Iranian gas was expected in 2009.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry said that it had anticipated the US State Department's reaction in regard to the Iran Sanctions Act. “We don't accept the extraterritorial application of American law . . . this is a contract to supply gas. It implies no investment in Iran,” the ministry said.

It is high time that we see more countries doing what is best for themselves instead of supporting corrupt globalist agendas. Let's face it, the countries in the EU have now lost their sovereignty, the US has lost all integrity. Why should we support EU/US/Israeli agendas? Israel, supported by the US taxpayers seems to be the one that squeals the loudest anytime anything happens that they don't control. I guess the good news is that more and more people are waking up to the fact that governments as a whole do not in the best interest of their citizens. If the people of these countries don't start to seriously oppose the neo-con globalist, there will be no end to the bloodshed and fascist direction these countries are plunging.

You thought by now that the US should give up trying to be the ''Police of The World''. With Globalisation, religion and race really should not be mixed with business.
Especially after its behaviour on the Iraq crisis, all these oli pipelines contracts they got in Iraq, etc...it is a bit hypocritical of the US govertment.
They bring their own judgement without even knowing any of the facts. Its a gas contract, NOT AN INVESTMENT! They should be ashamed of themselves.
Good on you Ms Calmy-Rey!

The era that American decide on who should do what is starting to end. I hope more and more European countries stand up to their interest as opposed to American's interest. Can you imagine what American do if a European country had invaded Afghanestan and Iraq. There are many ways to change a dictator regime if that's the purpose and invasion is the last and the least desired one. It's all about Oil and controling the world not about democracy and not about freedom. ...Too sad to see some European countries fall into american trap. American casualty now has reached 4000 and Al-Quada has been embolden five years later.... and guess what hawks do not mind another war....

The US will now be looking to extract grillions of dollars from Swiss companies in the USA...if anyone remembers the totally disgraceful behaviour over NY State/City financial services licences.
Iran of course should complain as loudly as others about the billions in US military aid used in the ME against indigenous peoples.

Good for the Swiss! At last one can find an independent country in europe. It is none of america's business to tell other countries how to proceed with their national interests. I have never seen US getting permission from swiss for their business deals! The time for colonial powers and bullying other countries has long past and US sooner or later will have to accept that whether they like it or not.
